The International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr François Carrard, former CAS arbitrator, at the age of 83.
François Carrard was among the founders of CAS in the years 1983-84 and an active arbitrator in the first years of existence of the Court. After a very successful career as IOC Director General, François Carrard remained active as an international practicing lawyer in his Lausanne-based firm and continued to appear regularly as counsel representing parties before the CAS. He will be remembered for his natural leadership, his outstanding knowledge of the sport movement and its structures, his fine legal analysis, his remarkable skills as a diplomat and communicator and for his passion for sport. The ICAS President & Members, as well as the CAS Director General and CAS personnel present their deepest condolences to Mr. Carrard’s family, colleagues and friends.
